June 9, 2015 - Do an internet speed test every 15 minutes and pipe the output to a comma delimited file. Start by using speedtest-cli.py. I modified the output to look like:

 2015, 06, 09, 14, 45, Ping, 10.144 , Download, 23.87 , Upload, 10.34

so it can be analyzed using LibreCalc. The file is saved at

/var/log/i-net/speed.txt

My variation of speedtest-cli is speedtest_pk.txt

The line in cron looks like

 "*/15 * * * * /usr/bin/python /sh/speedtest_PK.py --simple>> /var/log/i-net/speed.txt"

May 20, 2015. Several things today. Filter incoming mail for a unique subject and execute a bash script on the server when it encounters that subject. The script will speak on the PA system using the PI running festival and espeak. The mail goes through maildroprc and that uses MailDrop scripting language.

We log on to several servers and it would be nice to be able to do it without re-entering passwords. This is possible using ssh. This page gave me the way to do it.

ssh-keygen

Will create authentication keys for the current user in ~/.ssh.
But I was on the workbench machine logged in as Pierre and wanted to get onto the Pi machine as Mr. Pi. You can do that by first creating a publice key on workbench while logged in as Pi, renaming it to somthine like id_pi.rsa and copying that to ~pierre/.ssh. Then do a

ssh-copy-id -i ~/.ssh/id_pi.rsa pi

to put it on the pi server.
Then create a config file in ~pierre/.ssh that has

Host pi
  User pi
  IdentityFile ~/.ssh/id_pi.rsa

so now all you have to do is

ssh pi

and you will be on pi as pi.
Use a Raspberry Pi to ring the bells. Simply use a cron to control the bells although I've written a script to runs the “play” and it logs every bell ring to a file. Here is the BellCron file

And the playit script.
