Back to  How do you make Computer Chips?

A micro chip, or integrated circuit (IC), is something that is used to build many electronic devices that we use everyday. This includes:

Video games

Micro wave ovens

Stereos and portable radios and CD players, and

We have given you an example of micro chips. This chip came from some old, broken electronic equipment and so we're not too sure what they do. We have broken it open so you can actually see the little square inside that contains the circuit.

The little square contains a miniature circuit. It is made in a way that is similar to how photographs are made. A large diagram of the circuit is drawn on film that looks like a photo negative. Then this negative is made very small, unlike a photgraph which is usually made large. By using a combination of light-sensitive chemicals, the circuit is "etched" or burned into the chip.

Thanks for you question.
